The trip to Chicago for this summer has officially been booked and we will be staying at the Drake Hotel, named after the two brothers who established it, John and Tracy Drake. Guests first arrived inside the Drake on New Year’s Eve in 1920.
The Drake is the hotel pictured closest to the lower right hand corner. “THE DRAKE, LAKE SHORE DRIVE, CHICAGO. Bird’s-eye view of Chicago’s wonderful hotel. THE DRAKE, on the famous Boulevard Link, at the junction of Lake Shore Drive and Upper Michigan Avenue. Superbly located, directly overlooking Lake Michigan, yet only a few minutes ride from the business and theatrical centers. Unusually reasonable rates prevail throughout.” This card was mailed July of 1945.
Notable guests include Winston Churchill, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and Princess Diana. Gangster Frank Nitti headquartered here in the 1930s. In the Cape Cod room, a seafood restaurant in the hotel, you can find Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio’s initials carved in the wooden bar.
