The Drake Hotel

The trip to Chicago for this summer has officially been booked and we will be staying at the Drake Hotel, named after the two brothers who established it, John and Tracy Drake. Guests first arrived inside the Drake on New Year’s Eve in 1920.

The Drake is the hotel pictured closest to the lower right hand corner. “THE DRAKE, LAKE SHORE DRIVE, CHICAGO. Bird’s-eye view of Chicago’s wonderful hotel. THE DRAKE, on the famous Boulevard Link, at the junction of Lake Shore Drive and Upper Michigan Avenue. Superbly located, directly overlooking Lake Michigan, yet only a few minutes ride from the business and theatrical centers. Unusually reasonable rates prevail throughout.” This card was mailed July of 1945.

Notable guests include Winston Churchill, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and Princess Diana. Gangster Frank Nitti headquartered here in the 1930s. In the Cape Cod room, a seafood restaurant in the hotel, you can find Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio’s initials carved in the wooden bar.

Lucky! The Drake is nice. Downtown Chicago hotels are so expensive. I was gonna go back last fall, but I couldn’t find anything for under $130 a night. 😦

When we were looking we saw a Groupon for the Congress Hotel for $118 a night, but it didn’t have the best reviews. It’s a shame, because it is in a good spot!

Yes, I was told by a Chicago native to stay away from the Congress. Something about them always being on strike? When I went, I stayed at a Best Western on Michigan Avenue. It was right across from Grant Park, and maybe a 10 minute walk from the Museum Campus. That location really was perfect! The hotel wasn’t very nice, but I booked it like 3 months in advance and got a crazy low winter rate ($65 a night). When I tried to go in the summer/fall though, it was just impossible to find anything close to that rate.

So glad you are going! I’m sure it will be a great trip! Hope you aren’t missing a SJPC meeting!! 🙂
