1893 Columbian Exposition- U.S. Naval Exhibit Postcard

Naval Exhibit

I recently acquired my second postally used card from the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. This card features the battleship Illinois from the U.S. Naval Exhibit and a sailor off to the side.

The Illinois was not a real battleship, but instead was a replica made for the exhibit. It was constructed of brick and measured 348 feet long, complete with guns, turrets, anchors, boats, and more. An actual crew was on board to demonstrate drills. Near the Naval Exhibit were the Fisheries and U.S. Government buildings. To see an interactive tour of the fairgrounds, click here.

Nice! I still have yet to get a card from the 1893 World’s Fair. They’re always so expensive! I guess it’s understandable though.
