Ox-ygeen and Gas-oleen

This postcard from Amelia’s collection is a play on words, showing the difference between a farmer with his ox and men in an automobile. It says “Ox-ygeen and Gas-oleen “In the Land of the Sky” North Carolina. The Land of the Sky is a nickname for North Carolina, and it was also a book published in 1876 about the mountains in North Carolina.  Asheville, NC is between the Blue Ridge Mountains and Great Smoky Mountains, and The Land of the Sky is an adopted nickname for the city.

The card was published by Herbert W. Pelton in Asheville in 1912. It was never mailed.
