Book Review: Postcards from Santa Claus

Postcards from Santa Claus by Robert Hoffman provides a comprehensive history of how Santa Claus originated from Saint Nicholas, and his evolution over time.

The Santa Claus we know today first originated in Clement C. Moore’s “The Night Before Christmas,” which I learned in this book that Moore’s authorship was challenged in 2000, and Thomas Nast further edited his image in his drawings in Harper’s Weekly. Then, Haddon Sundbloom drew the Santa we all know from vintage Coca-Cola ads.

The book has different Christmas poems throughout, how to say “Merry Christmas” in different languages, and Christmas traditions in other parts of the world. Reading this book is a good way to get into the holiday spirit.
