Perhaps you have heard of the Edgewater Beach Hotel in Chicago. Well, the architectural firm Marshall and Fox built a sister hotel in Biloxi, Mississippi called the Edgewater Gulf Hotel. Shown below, this hotel was “air conditioned- 400 rooms- European Plan- rates from $3.00 per person in twin bedrooms- unexcelled accommodations- complete recreational facilities, including our own 18 hole championship golf course within a few hundred feet of the hotel.”
The hotel sat on 600 acres. It cost $2 million to build in 1924. Famous guests of the hotel included Harry Truman and Al Jolson. In May of 1971, the hotel was demolished. After 600 pounds of dynamite wired into the walls most of it still stood, and it took another 250 to take it down. Now, a mall called the Edgewater Mall stands in its place.
