While posting about Halloween on postcardcollector.org, I posted a category on anthropomorphic foods. This cabbage card by Ellen Clapsaddle was included in the discussion. I had no idea why cabbage were a Halloween topic, and a member on the forum had a superstitious postcard about picking cabbage on Hallowen. Depending on the roots it would determine what kind of man you would marry. I Googled to find out more about this superstition and came up with a site that mentioned three different things about cabbage:
1. When picking cabbages at midnight, the first man the girl meets on her way home is to be her husband.
2. When picking cabbages at midnight, the girl will see her future husband over her shoulder.
3. On Halloween a girl is to go through a graveyard, steal a cabbage and place it above the her door. The one on whom the cabbage falls as the door is opened is to be her husband.
