Interesting Postcard Message- Tao of Chi

“This is where the “tao” of chi herd themselves. June” This message is on the back of a postcard of Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, which used to be all houses. Potter Palmer’s house was built before Lake Shore Drive existed; he convinced Chicago to build the road to increase his home’s value. According to Wikipedia, “the drive was originally intended for leisurely strolls for the wealthy in their carriages, but as the auto age dawned it took on a different role completely.”

I am unsure of the meaning of the word “tao,” I tried looking it up but all I found were references to Taoism. Update- see Postcardy’s comment. The handwriting looks like it said tao but it actually is 400. Perhaps June was jealous she didn’t live there.

I am guessing, but here is another interpretation of the message.

“400” not “Tao” meaning the wealthy society people (like Mrs. Astor’s society list)
    “Chi” abbreviation for Chicago

    Something like this:
    The Annotated Forbes 400
A closer look at the 19 Chicagoans on Forbes magazine’s annual list of the country’s richest people.
